What Solunar Theory Says

Solunar theory is a long-standing, widely used concept in fishing and hunting. It proposes that animal feeding activity rises during "major" and "minor" periods each day, timed to the moon's position relative to a given location — roughly when the moon is overhead or underfoot for major periods, and when it rises or sets for minor periods. Major periods are generally considered longer and stronger than minor periods. This is general fishing knowledge, not specific to any one app or tool.

How ProFish Surfaces Solunar Data

ProFish applies solunar theory across several parts of the app:

  • Moon Calendar: a monthly moon-phase calendar with a fishing-quality rating for each day.
  • FishCast weighting: the FishCast score gives solunar period a 15% weight and moon phase a separate 15% weight, alongside pressure, wind, time of day, tide state, cloud cover, and precipitation. FishCast also highlights peak solunar feeding windows within its hour-by-hour forecast.
  • Solunar alerts: Trip Planner includes solunar major/minor feeding-period alerts alongside a weather preview.
